September 1, 2026

OAKLAND - The Commission on Health and Safety and Workers' Compensation's (CHSWC) School Action for Safety and Health (SASH) Program will offer a webinar, "Floods, Fires, and Smoke: How School Staff and Unions Are Addressing Emerging Weather-Related Hazards" on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, from noon to 1 p.m.

Weather-related health and safety hazards, including wildfire smoke, extreme heat, torrential rains and flooding, are becoming increasingly common in schools. The webinar will explore how these hazards affect school employees and how school staff are addressing them.

The presentation will be facilitated by Tenaya Lafore, Ed.D., of the Labor Occupational Health Program (LOHP) at UC Berkeley. The webinar is free, but registration is required. Additional information is available on the Center for Occupational and Environmental Health (COEH) event webpage.

LOHP is offering the presentation with COEH as part of the SASH program. CHSWC, which is part of the California Department of Industrial Relations (DIR), administers SASH through an interagency agreement with LOHP at UC Berkeley.

The SASH program provides resources that promote safe and "healthy workplaces for California's school employees. These resources include information about employers' obligation under California law to establish, implement and maintain an effective written Injury and Illness Prevention Program plan, including appropriate procedures and training.

Information about SASH and CHSWC is available online. Information may also be obtained by writing to the Commission on Health and Safety and Workers' Compensation by email to chswc@dir.ca.gov.
